Breve Coffee: What It Is and How to Make One

A breve is an espresso drink made with steamed half-and-half rather than milk. It is richer than a standard latte because half-and-half contains more fat.

What you need

  • Espresso or strong coffee
  • Cold half-and-half
  • A steam wand or milk frother

Basic method

  1. Prepare the espresso in a heat-safe cup.
  2. Steam or froth the half-and-half carefully. It can behave differently from milk, so begin with a small amount.
  3. Pour it into the espresso and adjust the balance to your taste.

Choose the coffee

Half-and-half can soften how strongly you perceive the coffee. If the coffee disappears in the drink, use a little less half-and-half, make the coffee more concentrated, or move one step darker in the roast lineup.

Diet and allergen note

A breve contains dairy unless you deliberately substitute another product. Nutrition varies with serving size and ingredients, so use the package labels when that information matters to you.
