Breve vs. Latte: The Useful Differences

A latte and a breve both begin with espresso. The main difference is the dairy.

Latte

A latte combines espresso with steamed milk and a layer of foam. The exact size and espresso-to-milk balance vary by café and by preference.

Breve

A breve uses steamed half-and-half instead of milk. It usually feels richer because half-and-half contains more fat.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose a latte when you want a milk-based espresso drink with a lighter dairy texture.
  • Choose a breve when you want a richer dairy texture and already know half-and-half fits your diet.
  • Choose neither if dairy does not work for you. Ask what non-dairy options are available and check the ingredient label.

Do not rely on a universal calorie number

Nutrition changes with cup size, number of espresso shots, dairy brand, and added syrups. Use the actual ingredients and serving size rather than a generic comparison.

Make the coffee noticeable

If the drink tastes mostly like dairy, reduce the dairy, strengthen the coffee, or try a darker roast. Change one thing at a time.
