A broken brewer does not require a rushed equipment purchase. Use what you have, measure consistently, and change one variable at a time.
Method 1: steep and strain
- Heat clean water until it is just off the boil.
- Combine ground coffee and water in a heat-safe container.
- Stir, let it steep for about four minutes, then pour slowly through a fine strainer.
If grounds pass through the strainer, let the cup settle for a minute before drinking.
Method 2: use a paper filter
Place a coffee filter in a stable strainer over a mug. Wet the filter, add coffee, and pour water in small stages. Keep the setup steady and do not overfill it.
Method 3: make a small cold brew batch
Combine coarse coffee and cool water in a covered container, refrigerate, then strain. Start with the instructions for your cold brew maker if you have one. Dilute the finished concentrate to taste.
Fix the result
- Thin or sharp: use a little more coffee or grind finer.
- Dry or harsh finish: grind coarser or shorten the brew time.
- Cloudy: use a finer strainer or paper filter.
